John Snidow

John Snidow, Jr. b. prior to 1768 (and perhaps born as early as 1764) in Lancaster Co. PA to John Jacob and Elizabeth Helm Snidow. According to the research of Judge John Alexander Kelly *,   "...By this time Elizabeth Snidow thought she had stood about all she could, when one day, shortly after Theophilus' death, her youngest son was brought home to her dead after having been thrown from a horse."   Snidow ms.

Apparently John may have died by 1791 as he did not appear in the list of tithables for 1791. Or did he move from the area temporarily???   Following is some of the documentation and then some questions:

1769–An old court record references John as a "poor boy" apprenticed out to a Mr. Campbell–Botetourt Co.
(Although not common, it was not unheard of to have a very young poor boy enter into an apprenticeship. For more info on that, go to the following link.)

1790–John is listed as a Tithable, by name, Montgomery Co. VA, living with his brother Jacob.

Questions:

1794 - A John Snidow witnessed the land deed from Elizabeth Snidow to her son Jacob (see our web page for Elizabeth's Land Patent). Elizabeth's grandchild John was only 9 yrs. old so it was not likely that he was the witness on the land deed. So is this Elizabeth's son John???

1806 - A John Snidow is listed in the 1806 Personal Property Tax List of Giles Co. VA.   WHO is this John Snidow? (Perhaps the son of Col. Christian, b. 1785???)

1811 - Marriage bond: Catherine Snidow/William Hale, signed by John Snidow (his mark). Again, WHO is this John Snidow? (The son of Col. Christian, b. 1785? Not likely. According to records, this John who married Rachael Chapman, did not have a dau. named Catherine.)   So, WHO is this Catherine Snidow?????
